A Bird in the Hand

Original

In the 19th century, carved models were used to teach German elementary school students how identify their local birds. Rather than two-dimensional drawings, these 3-dimensional figures were meant to lift off the wall, so kids could study their colors and composition up close. Through the years, their colorful plumage would become faded from the touch of curious fingers. To see the originals and hear more, go online.

We were rummaging through an antique stall in Germany when we came upon the charming 19th century antiques you see here. Ours are hand carved and meticulously painted to recreate them every colorful detail. And like the originals, they’re made to be handled, so each time you show them off, you add to their rich patina.
