A Dining Room Makeover! from Shannon
Dining Room before and after with much thanks to Ballard Designs!
BEFORE
The walls were painted, paneling painted white and the light fixture replaced. In addition, we added a new rug, table & chairs, drapes, tiebacks, corner cabinet, and fabric for pillows – all from Balllard Designs. Obviously, I LOVE Ballard Designs and how the products added the perfect touch for my dining room! Thank you Ballard!!!
AFTER

What a beautiful transformation! Ballard really makes a difference!!
What an amazing transformation! I love it. So inspiring for me, doing over my dining room now.
BEAUTIFUL!!!! What a change.
I like the paint but I think the chairs are way too big for a dining room table. The pictures are way too small to make a solid judgement but it all looks too white to me, not warm and inviting.
The colors on the wall are nice, i like light warm colors, but the chairs are to big and the upholsered chair command the room. I feel it would of looked better with all the chairs the same and smaller. Keeping in the same color palette the rug should have been lighter, its to dark maybe some color on the rug, but with a ligh body color. It looks at lot better than the first picture by 80% but if they could make the changes it would look a lot better, a mirror on the wall where the pictures are should of been considered or a larger picture or more smaller ones, but just two dosent work well. But much much better than the before picture.
Thank you so much to those who liked it! I really appreciate it! The space was specifically designed to meet the needs of my husband, myself, and our 3 little ones. With that said, I do agree that the chairs should be smaller. I do own the matching arm chairs that coordinate with the set. With the entire set present, the space craved softness. I tried pillows and various other items, but they didn’t seem to do the trick. So I pulled the wing backs from another room, and it instantly resolved the issue. I would have loved to down scale the size a bit with a pair of new chairs, add other accessories etc, but right now it is not in the budget, so I am using what I own. All in all, my family adores the space, the feeling of comfort it brings, and how perfectly it flows with the rest of the home. Once again, thank you Ballard for creating beautiful products that truly inspire!
What color is the paint?? I love it all!
Ballard’s — is the white corner cabinet in Shannon’s dining room makeover still available? I love the cabinet.
Dear Fran: The corner cabinet is indeed a Ballard piece. It is called the Full Chilton Curved Corner Cabinet.

BEAUTIFUL!!! There’s nothing like a great RE-DO…..enjoy it!
I love your transformation! I especially like the dark contrast of the rug to your white. It looks very inviting and like a home. With three little ones, you have a busy life but you’ll get around to making changes as budget and time allow. Congratulations on working well with what Ballard’s offers and what you can repurpose!
I have to say that room looks great! Also, the wing back chairs really add a uniqueness to the room. I love it!
just paint your old shield back chairs white and move the new high back chairs to another room!
I agree with Laura. You have a great start. Maybe you could slipcover your sheild chairs so you add in the softness and contrast without the oversizing.
What a makeover! It’s perfect. I could totally live there. Nice job.
I love the rug; it really grounds the space.
Love the transformation! It is warm, cozy and inviting!
Shannon, you’ve done a wonderful job with your new dining room transformation. I’m sure you’re very pleased and proud of it, as you should be. The changes, colors, and furniture selection are beautiful. It certainly exemplfies the Ballard look! Wow, I didn’t realize there are so many professional interior decorators viewing this makeover site. When the critical “interior decorators” want to offer their decorating expertise, labor, and/or funds to implement suggested changes, let them do so but you might first have them submit their “professional portfolios” for your review. The most important thing is that you & your family love it!!
I think Shannon did a wonderful job. There is a bit of nit picking going on but Shannon had a budget and a dream and I feel she achieved the look she was striving for. She can add or change things through the years and enjoy her room for a very long time. Nice job!!!!
Dear Shannon,
I felt your excitement when reading about your new dining room Then I read through the comments It is so unkind for people to press their thoughts and style onto someone else. I think your Dining room is Beautiful !!! Our homes are just that OUR HOMES an intimate place personalized for the homeowner. It is too bad that people cant just be happy for someones excitement. After all you did not ask for anyone’s opinion Keep your room just as you like it and don’t pay attention to the opinions in this thread
Hi! Thanks again for those positive comments. I also appreciate the suggestions as well. I would like to quickly mention for those who suggested that I paint the chairs in the before picture, I do not own that set. My family and I still love our new dining room and the changes we have made. With that said, it hard to judge a space without seeing it “live”, knowing the everyday use of the space, and how the it flows with the other spaces in the home. We are on an extremely tight budget with soon having 4 little ones 4 and under. There are so many items I would love to just simply buy to include in the space, but it is not an option. I am a big advocate on using already owned peices and/or “upcycling” preowned items in my decorating to create a look that may be costly. My entire house represents that. I am extremely proud on how little I spent to create a home that represents the style and design of the much loved Ballard Designs.
Shannon,
I love the transformation! The light colors really enlarged the space and it looks totally comfortable and elegant. I remember the days of having 4 little ones myself – I remember clearly I could not even keep wallpaper on the wall in my dining room because they would find the edge and peel it off!!! Slipcovers are such a good choice with kids!!Good job, love it.
I think you did an outstanding job on your redo. I have an Interior Design degree and appreciate all styles. I don’t have a particular one I prefer. My husband & I are currently looking for a log home but I also love your style. Enjoy!
Beautiful and chic! Great job, Shannon. Got to love Ballard.
I love it. It’s warm and inviting and works for you and your family. No other explanation needed!!!!!
I love it as it is! And LOVE LOVE LOVE the slipcovered chairs.
Shannon, someone asked above, and I too would love to know what the paint brand/color is on the walls?
What a stunning makeover! The difference is so dramatic. That gorgeous rug grounds the space so well, and that rich caramel color on the walls is so warm and inviting. I love how you tied it all together with the wall hangings, the detail in the curtains and cushions, and the iron chandelier. Those wing chairs look so comfortable, and slip covers are such a perfect solution when you have three little ones. It’s no wonder why your family adores your new space! You are very talented.

Shannon, how cozy your new dining room looks and feels, especially in the 1st snap shot.
You must be fearless redoing a dining room with a baby on the way! Thank goodness for Ballard, your results
look like you had a most successful partnership with them.
Most of congratulations to you and your family’s new baby!
This is such a beautiful room! So friendly and inviting. I love the dark rug, it balances the softness of the white furniture. And I do love the larger chairs, its hard to judge scale in a picture, I’m sure they’re perfect and very cozy. I move furniture pieces all over my house too, it gives the room new life. I just moved a dresser from my foyer and a chair from my basement into my family room and it looks fantastic and I didn’t have to spend a penny. And it frees up my foyer space for a new Ballard bench, cushion and rug!
